Designing a Blog Header

A Fresh Look for a New Year

Hello Friends,

Seams Like a Story is celebrating its one-year anniversary! My very first post, Creating a Space to Sew and Write, debuted January 4, 2021. http://seamslikeastory.com/creating-a-space-to-sew-and-write/ . Since then, I’ve published 46 posts and have had 4,793 views.

My most popular posts were from the RV trip we took with our granddaughter. http://seamslikeastory.com/the-rv-adventure-begins/

For a blogging newbie, I’m happy with the numbers. More importantly, Seams Like a Story has given me a chance to see the world through the eyes of a storyteller/writer. I love finding little snippets to share with you through my words and photographs each week.

Naming my Blog

When searching for a name for my blog, I wanted something that was novel (domain names need to be unique) and relevant to my two passions: sewing and writing. My daughter immediately rejected my first choice, Deb’s Sew Write. “It sounds like you are a know-it-all, and besides, when you smoosh it together the domain name looks ridiculous (debssewwrite) Too many double letters.” Kelli’s sew write. After much thought, I settled on Seams Like a Story. (Using a play on the word seems, maybe you were wondering…)

Getting Started

I’m not a techie. I knew what I wanted to do with the blog, but had no idea how to start. Fortunately I have a talented son-in-law Chris http://sirchuy.com who helped me set up Seams Like A Story (on wordpress hosted by Bluehost) and continues to offer assistance when I get stuck.

For my first year, staged a photo that I thought captured both sewing and writing and used it for my blog header.

Designing a New Blog Header

To celebrate the one-year mark, I updated the header photo. I arranged a stack of vintage books, my favorite colored pencils (a nod to my former teaching career and current writing life), thread, scissors, and buttons for sewing, and a succulent. (Full disclosure: Its fake, but I do get many inspirations from my real dessert friends.)  You will only part of the photo when you open the blog on your tablet or computer, even less if you view it on your cell phone, but I rather like the mysterious glimpse of what’s in store.

A New Logo

Daughter-in-law, Becca designed my new logo.
Just in time for my first book signing.

A Good Year for Writing

2021 was a good writing year for me. Besides launching my blog, I published my first book: Out of the Crayon Box: Thoughts on Teaching, Retirement, and Life

…and had two stories published in the Desert Leaf Magazine.
