Imagine a Disneyworld for authors and book lovers! Every spring, thousands descend on the campus of the University of Arizona for a weekend of workshops, author meet and greets, books sales, food , music, and fun. The Tucson Festival of Books has been virtual for the past few years, but took place in person this year, though plexiglass dividers and facemasks (for the most part.) Here are my take-aways from this year’s event:
The Tucson Festival of Books is a Place to meet authors!
I was especially excited to attend the this year because three of my author friends had roles in the Festival.
Rosemary Simpson (on the right) authors the Guilded Age Mystery series. She is currently working on her 8th book in the series and shared her vast knowledge in two workshops.
Wes Choc was in the Indie Author’s Pavillion where he was marketing his books: Hectic Treks, Just Dust, and Inconspicuous
David Davis, also an Independent Author, displays his books, Running In, Walking Out and The Unusual Man
The Tucson Festival of Books is a place for food, fun and, oh yes…BOOKS!
It takes a Village
Writing, putting thoughts to paper, is a solitary act, but to be a writer you need a tribe. I have recently come across the term: literary citizenship, being a part of a community of writers. This involves not only writing, but reading the work of others. To me, it also means being there for writers, learning from those who have more experience, encouraging emerging writers, participating in critique groups and writing organizations, buying and reading books, attending workshops, and yes, celebrating reading and writing. The festival in Tucson is a perfect place to be a literary citizen.
I can’t wait to come back next year!
